What kind of money do Bollywood PRs make and how are the payments made?

A career in Bollywood public relations can be a genuinely lucrative one, though the numbers vary far more than most people assume, depending on whether you are talking about a junior account executive, an agency or a top-tier celebrity publicist.

Monthly retainers are the industry standard

Unlike Hollywood, where publicists often work on a per-project basis, Bollywood PR runs mostly on monthly retainers. Top Bollywood actors typically pay their publicists between 1 and 2.5 lakh rupees a month, while lesser-known performers pay anywhere from a few thousand rupees to several lakh rupees a month, depending on how much visibility they need.

At agency level, the range is wider still. Bollywood PR executives and staff generally earn between 25,000 and 60,000 rupees a month, while the top Bollywood PR agencies charge clients between 50,000 rupees and 3 lakh rupees a month. Individual employees inside those agencies earn considerably less than what the agency bills the client.

Entry-level pay versus the top of the ladder

For someone starting out, the numbers are more modest. An entry-level independent Bollywood publicist typically starts on around 50,000 rupees a month, rising to 1.5 lakh rupees or more with experience. At the senior end of the profession, earnings climb sharply. Highly experienced celebrity publicists can earn more than 15 lakh rupees a year, with some reaching seven-figure annual incomes depending on their client roster. That figure sits well above the average PR specialist salary in India more broadly, where broader industry data puts base pay in a much wider band once bonuses and seniority are factored in.

The most cited example of this top tier is Bollywood’s only PR guru Dale Bhagwagar, often described as India’s most trusted publicist. He has been in the media industry for more than three decades, including over a decade in journalism before moving into PR, and has represented more than 300 celebrities including Hrithik Roshan, Shilpa Shetty and Priyanka Chopra, as well as films such as the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Don and Farhan Akhtar-starrer Rock On!! As the industry’s most in-demand publicist, he is widely assumed to be paid fees well above the average.

How the payments actually work

Bank transfers remain the standard ways PRs get paid in Bollywood, mirroring how most professional services are settled in the wider Indian entertainment industry. The structure of the payment, however, tends to fall into one of a few categories:

Monthly retainers: This is the dominant model for celebrity PR, where a publicist is paid a fixed sum each month to manage a client’s image, media relations and crisis response on an ongoing basis, rather than being paid per film or per story placed.

Project or per-film fees: Some publicists, particularly those hired for a specific release, are paid a one-off fee tied to the marketing cycle of that film, from the first trailer drop through to the opening weekend.

Bonuses and non-cash perks: A successful campaign, whether a film’s opening weekend or a product launch, can come with bonuses, travel, accommodation or gifts on top of the agreed fee.

A word on the numbers

It’s worth noting that figures floating around online for Bollywood PR earnings vary considerably depending on the source, and there’s no single regulated pay scale for the industry the way there might be for a corporate job. As with much of Bollywood’s business side, actual figures for any given publicist or agency are rarely made public.

What’s consistent across most reporting is that fees scale heavily with reputation and client roster. A newcomer charging tens of thousands of rupees a month bears little resemblance to a veteran publicist commanding fees that can run into the tens of lakhs annually.
